Retinol: Everything You Need To Know
Arguably the most popular and sought after skincare product of the past few years, Retinol is notorious for remedying a variety of skin ailments; But what exactly is it?
Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A, one of the body's essential nutrients for boosting cell turnover. It promotes skin renewal, reduces acne, boosts collagen production, exfoliates, brightens the appearance of the skin and has antioxidant functions that reduce visible signs of aging.
Now that we all know to start our skincare regimens early to slow and prevent the signs of aging, how and when should you start using Retinol?
As the benefits of preventative skincare have been brought to the forefront, it's advised to start using Retinol in your mid-twenties to prevent signs of aging and make sure your skin stays blemish-free. If you've never used it before or if you have sensitive skin, start with a pea sized amount (0.01% to 0.3%) once a week, then increase to alternating nights and eventually consider using it nightly.
Since sunlight decreases its efficacy, it’s best to use retinol at night, on dry cleansed skin, moisturize after and remember, always wear sunscreen during the day!
